It’s a guided mountaineering expedition to the summit of Cotopaxi (5,897 m / 19,347 ft) — one of Ecuador’s most famous and active volcanoes, located in the heart of the Andes.
Cotopaxi is a moderately challenging glacier climb that requires good physical condition. Climbers use crampons, ice axes, and ropes under the supervision of certified ASEGUIM guides.
No prior technical experience is required. Our guides teach you basic glacier techniques such as walking with crampons and ice axe self-arrest. Good fitness and acclimatization are essential.
The classic Cotopaxi climb takes 2 days — Day 1 for approach and rest at the refuge, and Day 2 for the midnight summit attempt and descent.
The expedition begins at El Chaupi (3,300 m / 10,826 ft), home of Cotopaxi Travel and Ilinizas Mountain Lodge, before heading to Cotopaxi National Park and the José Ribas Refuge (4,864 m / 15,953 ft).
We provide all technical equipment: ice axe, crampons, helmet, harness, and ropes. You only need proper mountain clothing and hiking boots. Rentals are available at Andes Alpes Mountain Gear Rental.
Professional ASEGUIM guide, transportation, meals during the climb, park fees, refuge accommodation, and technical gear. Private and group options are available.
The best seasons are June–September and December–February, when weather and glacier conditions are most stable and summit success rates are higher.
All climbs are led by ASEGUIM/UIAGM certified guides equipped with first-aid kits, oxygen, and communication radios. Safety protocols are followed throughout the ascent.
You can book directly on Cotopaxi Travel
