Itineraries

Day 1

Hike to Refugio Nuevos Horizontes Ilinizas

From any part of Ecuador, I suggest getting to El Chaupi village (3300m high) one day before the beginning of the trip. It will help your body to get adapted to the height, making easier the climbing to the summit. In El Chaupi you will find many hostels and lodges to overnight.

We will be transferred to the Illiniza parking at 3.950 meters. From the parking, we will walk about 2 or 3 hours until we get to Nuevos Horizontes Hut at 4.700 meters of height. In the hut, we will have dinner and rest until about 2:00 a.m.

Day 2

Climb to Iliniza Sur summit

We will get up at 2 am in order to have breakfast and start early the ascent to the South Illiniza. After 3 or 4 hours of climbing in a positive vertical drop of 50/55 degrees we will finally get to the summit. From there we can admire a amazing sunrise behind the famous Cotopaxi.

Return to the hut for a rest and then, continue hiking down to the parking where our transfer will be waiting to take us back to Quito.

In Ecuador you can hike all year, but these are the seasons:
- High Season: June to August / December to January
- Low season: February to May / September to November

Iliniza Sur is a more technical mountain, prior climbing experience is required and climbers should be in good physical condition.
